The team drove on the Saturday across Europe and had plenty of fun with sat nav’s interpretation of Dutch roads. After successfully weighing in on the Saturday night the team went for relaxing evening meal and then to bed.
The competition started on the Sunday morning with the juniors and in one hall and the seniors in another. It was tricky for the coaches to run between the halls but thanks to the parents that travelled with the team everyone had a coach all the time.
The patterns categories didn’t go as well as we hoped with only Josh Wadey getting a medal – silver in the Junior Black Belt division. However, Ottis and Holly were competing in their first overseas international and both got through their first round and only lost to the eventual finalist – in categories with over 50 competitors each!
In the sparring, again we didn’t get the medals that we had hoped but everyone came away knowing what to work on. Josh Wadey was the only medalist, getting bronze in the junior males category, with only his fitness letting him down. Holly and Ottis again won some rounds and large division getting a great experience competing against black belts. Mr Thompson got to the semi final but lost to the European champion.
It was then a quick exit to make sure that we could make the train back from Calais. It was a long weekend but a great experience and we all came away with lots of things to work on. Thanks to Master Willy van de Mortel for inviting us, to Mr Bourne for refereeing all day and to Mr Lear and and Carlton for driving and coaching.
